Review

In the Passion and Discipline of Strategy, Professor Krzysztof Obloj offers a welcomed antidote to the reductionist studies common in the field of strategic management. Noting the difficulty of defining strategy and how the logic and imperative of academia have produced a cacophony of definitions, Obloj offers a refreshing and candid discussion of the components of successful strategy implementation. He does so with both parsimony and nuance. The parsimony is achieved through Obloj's uncanny ability to draw upon his expansive knowledge of the strategic management literature to identify essential elements of effective strategy formulation. This discussion culminates in Chapter 5 "What makes a good Strategy." The nuance is introduced in Chapters 1 and 2 and is weaved throughout the narrative. Specifically, Obloj notes that whether it is a new entrant or whether it is a mature company seeking to meet the challenges of a dynamic marketplace, passion is the critical factor for successful strategy implementation. From this perspective, good strategy formulation is a necessary, but insufficient success factor since it is the passion of leaders and organizational members that are required for successful implementation. Obloj discusses the factors that contribute to passion, but not surprisingly, he recognizes its somewhat idiosyncratic nature. Indeed, if one could devise a formula for the development of passion, it may not be a distinguishing success factor. To underscore this point, Obloj notes that the strategies of most successful companies are well known, but that this does not undermine their competitive position. Strategies may be imitable but passion is not. The Passion and Discipline of Strategy is a valuable contribution for the reflective practitioner, academic researchers, and new and lifelong students of strategy. Highly recommended.
